Notes
A poster insert from La Rivista magazine promoting the election of the Fascist National Party. Schawinsky used photomontage in order to portray the dictator as an entity formed by the citizens and to which the citizens belong, thus identifying the people and their leader as the very same thing.
The sense of the crowd is visually kept consistent through the enlargement of the halftone pattern in the head, while the authority of Mussolini is emphasized by both his looking from top to bottom and the position of the leader (the head) and that of the citizens (the body).
The poster is a masterpiece of Italian graphic design and reveals the great talent of Schawinsky, who conceived a powerful image that has its roots in Abraham Bosse’s engraving for the frontispiece of Thomas Hobbes’s Leviathan (1651). [NM]
